Steam Power
Today we headed to Gastown to see this steam powered clock everyone keeps talking about. The clock was reasonably easy to locate, it was on the corner with all the tourists. We hung around the old town for a while before heading to Granville island. Granville island isn’t really an island, but more of a peninsula because we could get to it with the public bus.
As we were traveling over the Granville bridge, we could hear a lot of police sirens then followed by half a dozen police bikes then a cavalcade of black cars. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in town. He has been in Toronto and Ottowa for the last couple of days speaking about California and what he is doing towards reducing greenhouse emissions. The news also made reference to the 4 hummers he owns. They typically get 8 miles to the gallon. He has had one converted to hydrogen just to do his bit.
Granville island was an industrial area and has transformed into an art and markets district. We caught what is best described as a bath tub ferry back to the mainland (although we had never left). Once back on the “mainland”, we headed to Robson Street and had Indian. When the waitress asked how we would like our curries, we chose medium. On reflection we should have chosen mild because our mouths still burn after the gelati we had to have to cool them down. Who knows what would have happened if we chose hot!!
Tomorrow is our last day in Canada before heading off to Tampa, Florida on Saturday morning. Those Canadian souvenir shops are going to get a work out. Until now we’ve been putting off buying Canadian souvenirs to keep the weight of our cases down to make our flight connections easier (and cheaper - we once flew Ryanair in Europe. Fair 2 pounds, excess baggage 40 pounds). Now that we have another case and larger weight allowances for our USA part of our trip, it’s not just us who will be putting on weight.
Also, Meg thinks her email may not be working (it’s fine, I checked), so if you have sent her email since May 18, forward it to Me.
