Out in the garden
Today we went to the Butchart gardens. These gardens are over a hundred years old and are the result of the Butchart family filling in a limestone quarry. It’s a slick operation and kind of like a Disneyland for flowers. My idea of gardening is making up a batch of Round-up, so this was pretty impressive.
Meg went to town with the photos, a selection is posted here.
We drove to Oak bay along the coast road. The coast road goes along the southern tip of Vancouver Island. We thought about going whale watching this morning.Good choice not to. The winds came up by mid-afternoon to about 25-30 knots and some quite lumpy seas. I found it interesting that the sea planes between Victoria and Seattle/Vancouver continued to operate.
We watched some sailing from the Oak bay marina. A fleet of 20-30 full-rig Lasers were doing it tough. Pity I didn’t bring my sailing gear with me
We took the coast road back to the city centre. The yachts were in from the Swiftsure international yacht race, they say it’s an international yacht race, this is only because much of the fleet comes from Port Angeles and Seattle, USA.
We sought out somewhere to eat. We completely missed lunch today because breakfast at the B&B was a three course meal. The hospitality of the B&B is overwhelming. We decided to stay another night in Victoria. When I asked if they had a room available, the guy who runs the B&B gladly upgraded us and insisted that he take me to the new room to see if I would be happy with the upgrade. The family that runs this place is extremely house proud.
Anyway, back to dinner. In Victoria, it seems easier to find a chocolate shop or a busker than a restaurant to eat in. We went to a Japanese sushi restaurant to find out that sushi finished at 5. So we had the combination for 2, which itself was a bargain and filled us up with 4 courses. Finally a dinner in Canada less than $40.
