Ye Olde Victoria
We drove from Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver island to Victoria in the south. This was a 6 hour drive which meandered along the highway 19A coast road. We passed through many fishing towns before arriving in Victoria.
We stopped in to have lunch at the Cable house, just off the freeway near Sayward. This is a lunch stop for many of the logging trucks in the area. The walls are made with used logging cable, mostly 2″ “skyline” right hand lay, with a strip of left hand lay cable around the centre. There is approximately 8,200 feet of wire rope welded to the channel iron frame of the structure. The weight of these walls is 26 tons. When paying the bill the woman behind the counter asked where I was from, when I said Australia, she said “Australia, we’ve been getting a lot of Europeans through here today”. Now she definitely said Australia and not Austria, but there’s no point correcting.
We’re staying at the Amethyst Inn and were both overwhelmed by it’s Victorian styling, decor and antiquities. The only non-authentic feature is the family that is running it. There also seem to be family members behind each door studying or going about their activities.
We went downtown for dinner and found that the Swiftsure yacht race is on this weekend. The city is busy, but not bustling busy.
For those who are interested, we’ve now visited all of these Canadian states and provinces
All of these US states by the end of this trip
And all of these countries
