Snow and Ice, and more snow and ice.

Firstly, congratulations to Rob and Kerry for the birth of their second son, Quinn Fredrick, 8 lb 6 oz, 51cm. Rob advises all are doing well.

This is going to be a long post as it will be two installments in one, so for those slacking off at work to read this, get your coffee now. For the geeks, the internet cafe has just shut so we’re sitting in the car outside the cafe “borrowing” their wifi internet, we’ll buy a coffee there tomorrow. We will, sure.

Meg on Horse

The weather today was much more favourable for site seeing. We started the day with a horse trial ride along the Spray river. The guides gave us instructions on how to direct our horses but I’m reasonably sure that the horses have done this route so many times before that if we fell off, the horse would keep going. We were both a little sore afterwards, not sure if this was the near zero temperature and horseback combination.

Rocky mountains day 1

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Thanks to our personal rocky mountain tour guides Kim and Michele, we had a running start to Banff this morning. After picking up our rental car from the most relaxed and laid back Canadians we have come across so far, we set off driving in the Rockies.

You are the last team to arrive…

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

Anyone who has watched the Amazing Race TV show knows that the last team to arrive at the pitstop will either be eliminated or will start the next leg of their race without any money or clothes. Today we faced that challenge.

Blue penguins and black squirrels

Today we did what every tourist does, we went on the Maid of the Mist. The maid has been running since 1846 and they have plenty of photos of people such as JFK and Marilyn Monroe riding on the mist.

Today was the last of our early morning flights until we leave Vancouver in a few weeks, yay!

I also took on my first challenge of the trip, driving in Toronto. As Meg mentioned in the previous post, we used Hotwire quite a lot to book parts of our trip. In this case we booked a rental car for $25 day. Again hotwire doesn’t tell you which company is offering this price until after you confirm the booking. For us this was budget and the car is a PT Cruiser, it’s a pretty cool car. So at the airport we picked up our car and Karen.

Montreal in a flash

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Well we had planned to write a post last night (May 15), but we didn’t get to our hotel until late and had…guess what…another early morning flight.

So yesterday we started the morning off early (4am again) because we had a 6am train from Quebec City to Montreal. We had planned to walk to the train station to wake ourselves up (it was around 2 degrees), but unfortunately it was raining so we had to catch a cab. The train station in Quebec City was very small, but it looked like a castle! Very strange!

Au revoir Quebec!

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Today we did a walking tour of Quebec city with our guide Jacque. Jacque, a knowledgeable local took us to all those spots that we never would have found reading tripadvisor or with our trusty lonely planet guide.

Bonjour Quebec!

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Meg’s asleep, so I’m writing this one tonight.  Yet another early morning start. This bright idea to catch red-eye flights and trains is starting to wear thin. On the upside an early morning flight feels shorter because we both fall asleep at taxi and wake up as the plane pulls into the gate.
